There is no need for an extra runway at Gatwick because of the expansion of Heathrow. It is merely an exercise in muscle-flexing by the Gatwick chief executive. The negative environmental impact is entirely unnecessary because the use of flights for business reasons has lessened since the pandemic, and infrastructure projects should be geared towards reducing carbon emissions, not increasing them for profit reasons only. In addition, the overflight implications for surrounding towns and villages, which already suffer from Gatwick's scattergun approach to dispersal, failure to introduce the promised quieter landing practices and continued use of night flights, will cause widespread suffering for no justifiable reason.
