The need for this project is based on projections of growth in future air traffic. These projections are in turn based on underlying assumptions regarding the economics of air transport as against alternatives. The taxation of aircraft fuel is highly favourable (i.e. low). This should, and likely will come under increasing public scrutiny. I have three issues with the proposal: 1- increased carbon emissions from increased air traffic; 2- the imbalance of north/south infrastructure investment; 3- the increased national road traffic load from expanding an airport south of London. Until these issues are fully debated in public and tested at a general election I cannot support the proposal.
