The airport is already unable to employ sufficient staff and there is in sufficient evidence to suggest that a massive increase in air travel is required. There is already massive lack of infrastructure in the area to support this further expansion. With the massive increase in passengers, most of whom will arrive by road as rail transport cannot be increased, where will all the travellers’ cars park? More precious land will doubtless be eaten up. Massive increase in traffic on already heavily used motorways and surrounding road systems which will add massive pollution from particles of rubber from vehicle tyres and increased noise from thousands more journeys on the motorways and other roads. Doubtless more freight on the roads using heavy transport. Our county is already losing valuable areas of natural beauty and this project will doubtless require even more development and there is already insufficient infrastructure to support what is already here; local roads are already in very poor condition and congested and doubtless traffic will divert onto the minor roads. Aircraft may be quieter but there is bound to be added air pollution - electric planes aren’t going to arrive anytime soon! All in all an environmental disaster! The expansion is no small project to just bring the existing ‘second’ runway into greater use. The plans emerging demonstrate that existing buildings around this runway will be removed and that the whole area will be further developed And a third terminal is likely to be included. The currant infrastructure will not cope with this.
