Apart from noise and pollution: there's just not the infrastructure to handle the proposed increase in passenger numbers, whether by road or rail. Nor is there provision for housing, or conveying in, the necessary additional workers. When I lived near Oxted I saw this at first hand. Now, from Chichester, the Southern line to London often struggles to provide enough capacity as things are. Train lengths and schedules are both infrastructure limited and, often, working on those limits, without any additional passengers from second runway flights. Can extra rail capacity be provide without building more track?
