My main concern about any proposed expansion of Gatwick Airport is the increased air traffic and consequently noise that this will bring to the surrounding areas and in particular the areas of outstanding natural beauty formed by the Greensand Hills in Surrey and Kent, and the High Weald AONB that lies to the south. These areas are enjoyed for their unspoiled countryside and tranquillity not only by the residents who live there but also by the many visitors who make their way from London and further afield. Examination of a map of countryside around London shows the area on the Kent/Surrey border to be one of the very few areas of unspoiled countryside just outside the M25. It is home to historic properties, including Chartwell, Knole, Hever Castle, Penshurst and Chiddingstone and others that are enjoyed by many. My second concern is what appears to be a lack of consultation on this occasion. I heard about the proposed expansion and the deadline almost by accident. In contrast, a few years ago there was widespread consultation regarding proposals to change flight paths in and out of Gatwick. I made comments at the time and we were informed that flights would be confined to relatively narrow corridors to the East and West of the airport, with relatively little traffic flying over the sensitive Greensand Hills to the North. This area is elevated and naturally tranquil; large areas owned by the National Trust and wooded commons are crossed by a high density of well used footpaths. Despite these assurances, my impression is there has been an increase in flights over-flying from Gatwick recently. Whatever assurances may be provided by Gatwick Airport Limited, I feel that any expansion of the airport can only make the problem of noise in this area worse. In conclusion, I wish to object to any development at Gatwick Airport that will lead to an increase in flights over this part of south-east England and areas of outstanding natural beauty. I understand that any airport results in noise and disturbance to those who live close to the flight paths. However, where expansion in overall capacity is required, the presumption should be that additional flights should be confined to areas where there is already a high level of background noise and disturbance due to major roads, railways, industry and the usual man-made activities encountered in built-up areas.
