Making more effective use of the existing northern runway will, I believe, contribute many of the economic advantages offered by flight capacity expansion while at the same time minimising the damage that would be otherwise be done to Surrey's countryside by a 'new-build' runway along an approximate Charlwood to Hookwood alignment. Another major challenge in any event (i.e. existing or new-build northern runway) will be the provision of appropriate transport infrastructure for an expanded airport - in particular improved rail and road links. This suggests the need for a strategic, sustainable and co-ordinated vision and plan for all the UK's airports, including another growing airport just outside Surrey's border at Farnborough, Hampshire. On the issue of sustainability, it is important that the drive towards increased airline capacity is delivered by cleaner, greener fuels (as currently being trialled by Virgin Atlantic) and improved power plants and airframes.
