In summary, I object to the proposal for a second runway at Gatwick Airport on three grounds. First, the Government examined the question of airport expansion and chose Heathrow, not Gatwick. Secondly, there is excess capacity in the airline industry. We need more efficient allocation of current routes, not more runways or flights. Thirdly, the environmental damage which will be caused, both in building the runway and in operating it; including increased emissions damaging to the climate, increased noise pollution, increased air pollution and increased traffic congestion. No economic case can justify this destruction of health, climate and environment.
